To Whom It May Inspire,

The principle tenet of indie filmmaking is a truly uncompromising artistic integrity.

Major studios today do not have one shred of care for the craft of filmmaking. They are eager to swallow any indie filmmaker and regurgitate them as a wad of cud, chewed ad nauseum by a herd of executives, stripped of any luminance of creativity. Being an indie filmmaker means resisting the abrading machination of these hulking megamulchers as much as possible, and staying true to your own creative vision. Only a steel spine can shatter the jaws of the devourer.

Being an indie filmmaker means being resolute in your intention, and translating your script to the screen with undiluted faith. It means answering the questions of your department heads, no matter how minute, with thoroughness and zeal. It means building every decision on the foundation of the story, and ensuring that story comes first. When a filmmaker does these things, they cannot fail. That’s what it means not only to be an indie filmmaker, but to be a great artist.

A real artist.
